At no time since the Great Depression has there been a more urgent need to invest in our children’s well-being. Statistics from the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT survey underscore the need for urgent action:

• One in twenty children live in out-of-home placements.
• One in five children live in poverty, and over one-third live in homes where no parent has full-time, year-round employment.
• By 4th grade, one in three children read below their grade level. Little statistical improvement in reading is seen by 8th grade, indicating that once a youngster falls behind in reading, it is very difficult to catch up.
• Nearly one in three children are overweight and at increased risk for diabetes and other major health complications.
